What a replacement includes
- Removing the old unit or tub, and the wall around it if it is a tiled surround
- Checking the subfloor and the drain once the old fixture is out
- A new tub, base or unit, set level and supported
- New tile or solid-surface walls over a waterproofed backer
- A new valve when the old one is not a pressure-balancing type
Permit
Replacing the valve or reconnecting the drain is plumbing work that needs a permit. A like-for-like swap that leaves every connection alone may not; the building department for your address decides, and the remodeler pulls the permit when one is needed.
One-piece units and doorways
A one-piece fiberglass unit was often set before the walls went up and will not fit back through the door. Replacements are usually multi-piece units, a tub with a separate surround, or a tiled wall.
